Can you believe that we are back to registering our students for a new school year?  We are excited that you are part of our McMillan Family Community and hope that you will have wonderful experiences along with your student(s) all year long! We want every parent at McMillan Elementary to feel connected, valued, and appreciated.   Field Day is Coming to McMillan! Get ready for one of our favorite McMillan traditions —  Field Day is happening Tuesday, May 26 from 1:30–3:15 PM! All students will participate together in our huge variety of activities including sports games, obstacle courses, water games, yard games, snacks, and more. Students can even dunk a 6th grader in the dunk tank, enjoy popcorn, snow cones, watermelon, and popsicles, and complete a special BINGO card to earn a prize! The theme this year is DISNEY and we can't wait for your children to see what we have come up with! Our teachers are planning to dress up as Disney characters to help with our BINGO card - we are sure it is going to make the day even more magical! McMillan’s annual Fit, Fun Run is here!   We’re excited to continue this beloved tradition!   We want to give a huge thank-you to Miss Angie Thompson for organizing it each year. All students are encouraged to walk or run 1, 2, or 3 miles . Kindergarten parents are strongly encouraged to participate with their child to help them follow the route and signs. Permission slips will be sent home with each student. The run starts and ends at McMillan , beginning north on Fashion Blvd. While a detailed route map isn’t being shared for safety reasons, there will be plenty of signs and volunteers along the way, plus support from the Murray Police Department to ensure student safety. Each student will receive a free Fit, Fun Run shirt (designed by a McMillan student) and provided by Dr. Dolata and Mrs. Bigelow. Please send your child in comfortable socks and running shoes . Teacher Appreciation Week is HERE! Dear Parents and Guardians, We’re excited to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week from April 13–17! This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show gratitude for the hard work, care, and dedication our teachers give every day. The theme this year is:  🍓🍓How 'Berry' Sweet it is to be taught by YOU! 🍓🍓 Each day of the week will have a suggested small gift idea. Some of these ideas are completely free (like a handwritten note or drawing), while others are optional small tokens of appreciation. Please note: Participation is completely optional. Your child is not required to bring anything at all. Students are welcome to participate as much or as little as they’d like. Our goal is simply to spread kindness and appreciation in ways that feel comfortable for every family.  Rock Your Socks Don't forget to wear bright, fun socks to school on Thursday!  Each teacher will count up how many kiddos participated and two classrooms with the highest percentages will have a chance to win a classroom set of fun socks!  One set is from John's Crazy Socks based in Farmington, Utah and run by a Father-Son team!

March 2026 Cultural & Awareness Celebrations March is full of opportunities for students and families to learn about cultures, traditions, and important awareness topics from around the world. Below are several March observances with ideas and local events where families can participate and learn together. March 3 – Purim ✡️ Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrating the story of Queen Esther and the salvation of the Jewish people. Hello, all!  We hope that you will plan on attending the PTA's annual Parents and Pastries event on TUESDAY MARCH 3rd! All parents are invited to come to school with your children to read and celebrate the connection that we gain as we read together.  We love that this also happens around Dr. Seuss's birthday each year, so we include that as part of our theme! Doors open at 8:15 and students are excused at 8:35 to go outside to line up before the school bell rings.   Things to note: Your child(ren) really will love to have you read to them during that 20 minutes, but if you are not able to attend, there are volunteers on-site from our local Fire and Police Stations to read with your them!  You do NOT have to bring your own book(s), but you can! Blankets are fun if you want to bring one, but please know that we are all pretty packed into the lunchroom, so finding a spot to sit can be a bit tricky.  A BINGO card will be sent home with every student before the...

 February: A Month to Celebrate Diversity, Culture, and New Beginnings! February isn’t just Valentine’s Day — it’s a special month where we learn about and celebrate different cultures and traditions from around the world!  Two big celebrations happening this month are Black History Month and Lunar New Year. Black History Month — Honoring Stories and Leaders Every February, we celebrate Black History Month — a time to learn about the history, achievements, contributions, and culture of Black Americans. This helps us appreciate how many people of different backgrounds have helped shape our world. Here are some fun and creative ways kids and families can celebrate diversity and learn together: 1. Learn Through Art and Exhibits -Communities around Utah are hosting events that celebrate Black history and culture. Hello,  McMillan Community! Tomorrow, Tuesday November 11th, we will be celebrating and honoring the Veterans' of the United States Armed Forces and would love to honor any veterans that are part of your family! Our assembly begins at 9:30 am in the McMillan Elementary multi-purpose room (Cafeteria, Gym, Auditorium).  All students attend and participate in the program.  It is usually an hour long and features essays written and read by students at McMillan, songs from each grade level, and a slideshow presentation. While only families escorting Veterans are invited to attend (or if your student has been selected to read their essay), ALL students are encouraged to wear Red, White, and/or Blue to help create a patriotic atmosphere.  We truly appreciate, respect, and honor the brave men and women who have served to preserve our freedom as Americans.   Happy Veteran's Day!

 November is Native American Heritage Month! This month, we celebrate and honor the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American and Indigenous peoples across the United States. At McMillan, we believe that learning about and respecting all cultures helps our students grow as curious, compassionate, and inclusive learners. Throughout November, consider exploring stories, traditions, art, and community connections that highlight the incredible diversity and strength of Native American heritage. Back to School BBQ – A Fun Kickoff for all! Even though the school year has already started, we traditionally hold our  Back to School BBQ  giving families—especially those new to our school—a chance to meet, mingle, and feel like part of our community! Whether your child is just starting kindergarten or transferring from another school, this BBQ is all about building connections, enjoying good food together, and starting the year with smiles. What’s Happening at the BBQ Food Your Way : Feel free to bring your own lunch from home , purchase a school-prepared meal (cash only) , or even grab something on the way and bring it with you . Everyone’s welcome no matter what’s on your plate! Some Beginning of the Year FAQs 1. Does McMillan have a Spirit Store for T-shirts and other swag? Not anymore. Our principal, Dr. Dolata, generously purchases a shirt for every McMillan student once a year for them to wear on Fridays! We love having the chance for every child to have a shirt to show off their Might Mite pride and felt like offering an additional shirt was not a helpful use of volunteer time or resources. 2. Is the Chromebook Insurance actually worth it? YES! The vast majority of parents agree that a $25 insurance policy has been worth it for the times when their child's computer has needed servicing.  Go to the Murray City School District website for more information on how to purchase it if you haven't already. 3. Hello, McMillan Community!  We are so glad that you are here and hope that you are feeling ready to take on a new school year together. We hope everyone 1-6 had a wonderful first day of school! We have a few upcoming things to remind you about: 1. Kindergarteners start THIS Thursday and there will be a mini-event for parents/guardians directly after drop off.   2. We are starting our Membership drive on August 25 to September 5th. Please consider joining the PTA.  The membership cost is $10.  More information on what that money goes toward as well as a Membership Drive Event flyer, look in the PTA packet you will receive the second week of school.   3. Hello, McMillan Community!   While we are all still enjoying our summer break, there are 2 upcoming dates to add to your calendars for the upcoming school year.   1. Registration opens next Monday, July 28.   Here is what the Murray City School District website has to say about registration:  Even if your student attended Murray City School District last year,  all students must re-register for the 2025-2026 school year.  Good news – online registration officially opened on  Monday, July 28th!  This digital process is quick and convenient. You can find the link to register your student on our district website. (I always register through Aspire) For new students to the district, or for those who prefer in-person support, registration assistance will also be available at each of our schools.
