Back to School BBQ – A Fun Kickoff for all!

Even though the school year has already started, we traditionally hold our Back to School BBQ giving families—especially those new to our school—a chance to meet, mingle, and feel like part of our community!

Whether your child is just starting kindergarten or transferring from another school, this BBQ is all about building connections, enjoying good food together, and starting the year with smiles.

What’s Happening at the BBQ

  • Food Your Way: Feel free to bring your own lunch from home, purchase a school-prepared meal (cash only), or even grab something on the way and bring it with you. Everyone’s welcome no matter what’s on your plate! If you don't plan to purchase a lunch at the school, feel free to plan out with your child where you'll meet them (IF you can attend) and then head right over to the large field on the East side of the school.  

  • Buying a lunch? Bring cash!: Adult meals are $4 and the visiting child price is $3.25

  • Meet the Teachers: Teachers and staff will be there to chat, so you can put faces to names!

  • Fun for the Kids: Whether you can be there or not, just let you child know and they can always sit with another family or group.  It can be hard for Kindergartners to disconnect with their parents after seeing them in the middle of the day, so come up with a plan for how you can happily wave goodbye and let them get back to learning!

  • Community Connections: A chance to meet other new families and returning ones! McMillan used to do a voluntary Parent Directory, but it has been some years since that has been a feasible option, so look for chances to connect with the families of your children's school friends!

Tips for New Families

If this is your first school event, here are a few simple ways to make the most of it:

  • Bring a blanket or lawn chairs: The grass CAN be wet in some places - especially in the shade. Again, wagons are our best friends this day!

  • Parking is limited – the lots get busy and crowded. Feel free to park near the school wherever you can and walk in. Wagons are a lifesaver for hauling blankets, food, camp chairs, and all the gear you need for a comfortable lunch.

  • Come ready to introduce yourself – everyone is friendly, and this is the easiest way to start building connections!

  • Ask questions – veteran parents are often the best resource for little things like drop-off routines, homework/reading routines, or how your child is earning "points" through the school-wide incentive program teachers are participating in.

  • Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone yet – by the end of the lunch, you’ll leave with a few new friends.

Field Day!

  Field Day is Coming to McMillan! Get ready for one of our favorite McMillan traditions —  Field Day is happening Tuesday, May 26 from 1:30–3:15 PM! All students will participate together in our huge variety of activities including sports games, obstacle courses, water games, yard games, snacks, and more. Students can even dunk a 6th grader in the dunk tank, enjoy popcorn, snow cones, watermelon, and popsicles, and complete a special BINGO card to earn a prize! The theme this year is DISNEY and we can't wait for your children to see what we have come up with! Our teachers are planning to dress up as Disney characters to help with our BINGO card - we are sure it is going to make the day even more magical! Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week April 13-17

Teacher Appreciation Week is HERE! Dear Parents and Guardians, We’re excited to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week from April 13–17! This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show gratitude for the hard work, care, and dedication our teachers give every day. The theme this year is:  🍓🍓How 'Berry' Sweet it is to be taught by YOU! 🍓🍓 Each day of the week will have a suggested small gift idea. Some of these ideas are completely free (like a handwritten note or drawing), while others are optional small tokens of appreciation. Please note: Participation is completely optional.
